The Solar PV Installation a brief guide- part 2
The solar PV installation- how it all fits together.
Part 2 – The DC electrical installation.
The solar PV installation can be split up into a few different areas. The mounting of the panels, the DC electrical work and the AC electrical work. This is how the AC installation is fitted. The AC is the mains electricity that is supplied to you house and is normally around 230-240v. Now we have the DC electrical installation. Working from the Solar Modules or panels, this is how the energy travels from the PV to the inverter, where the the components go and how they work.
From the solar PV array that sits on your roof (or in your garden!) special solar cable is plugged into connections on the solar modules. The modules that make up the array are each have a positive and negative cable and connector on them, these are plugged into each other positive to negative, positive to negative until the string of modules is all connected. This leaves a negative connector at one end of the array and a positive at the other.

These 2 ends are then connected to the solar cable that penetrates the roof and goes to the inverter. All the connections are designed specifically for the requirements of a solar pv system, these include high DC voltage, water resistance and a long lifetime. The solar cable is also designed for its use as a DC and outside cable.
some Solar DC connectors, weather proof and DC rated.
The roof penetration is sealed using lead flashing, purpose designed vents or similar, depending on the roofing materials in a similar (or probably much better) way that a TV aerial cable might go in. The solar cables should be the only thing that actually goes through the roof and the roof itself is left just as weather tight as before the installation.
A Dc isolator
The solar cable the goes to a DC isolator, this is almost (but not quite) the same as an AC isolator.
The next item along is one of the most important bits of the system – the inverter. Choosing the right inverter is as important as the modules. Each different system, whether in size or the modules used performs differently and will need a different inverter to suit. The inverter converts the DC power of the solar array to the AC supply of your house, keeping it exactly the same voltage and frequency. It also constantly adjusts they way the power is converted depending on the output of the array- whether it is sunny or cloudy, hot or cold and always keeps things running at maximum efficiency.

Above are some of the different brands of inverters available. The inverter may be located in the loft, garage or cellar. The inverter will have a display that tells the current output and historic performance of the system. Because the inverter is usually in an out of the way place many often have a remote display unit that can work using Bluetooth or similar. This means you can keep track of how your system is doing whilst sat in your kitchen.
We hope this information is useful, next up is the fitting of the Solar modules and array to the roof or other location.
